Cabinet Colors go Beyond Brown!

Cabinets in every color!

Cabinetry colors and finishes go waaay beyond brown or white. If you want purple cabinets to match your fav dress, it can happen! Just like dyed wedding shoes, the options are endless! Here are some finish tips.

When choosing cabinetry, remember every wood species has its own characteristics which affect the stain or color hue. Maple and oak look totally different in the same finish.

All cabinet manufacturers offer similar stain colors—natural, dark brown, reddish brown, vanilla—each with their own catchy names. Jazz up these colors by applying a glaze for oodles of dimension in the nooks, corners and edges. A vanilla cream cabinet with chocolate glaze sounds yummy!

Goin’ for shabby chic, cottage or cabin feel? Adding a distressed finish with worn edges, wormy holes, and light chain distressing can make something new feel old and cozy. Yikes, we’ve just sanded the surface!

StarMark’s Aegean Mist is a nice contrast to the wood tone.

A kitchen remodel – Before & After

Sometimes after a kitchen remodel, you forget the “before” look because the “after” is so beautiful. That’s what this homeowner discovered as she enjoys her newly renovated kitchen.

After: A mix of cabinetry finishes pulled together with a granite countertop.

The Oak Ridge home was due a kitchen remodel. The cabinetry was worn and countertops dated. The homeowner also wanted to change the traffic flow for a more open space. A door to an adjoining room was moved and a pass-through cut for a more open feel. The L-shape of the counter was removed and the sink relocated under the pass-through.

When selecting cabinetry, the homeowner knew she wanted a light color but looked to the expertise of Modern Supply’s design team for their recommendations. After looking at several options, plans were drawn and selections finalized.

StarMark Cabinetry was chosen for their superior construction, quality of finishes and selection of door styles and finishes. The primary cabinets are maple finished in buttercream with a chocolate glaze. Sounds good enough to eat!

A bit skeptical, the homeowner agreed to the suggestion of a second finish for the island. The same door style was used but in cherry with a toffee finish and chocolate glaze. She’s thrilled with the outcome and it complements the buttercream finish. Both finishes are pulled together with a gorgeous granite countertop.

Little extras add so much in for a more polished look and extra convenience. Light rail below the cabinets help conceal under counter lighting; crown rail finishes the cabinet tops; finished end panels match the doors for a refined look; corner drawer storage; spice racks; utensil drawer; and vertical storage for cookie sheets all maximize space and a finishing touch.

Pleased with the outcome, the family is enjoying the new kitchen and space arrangement. On to the next project…I believe there are workers on the deck today!

A Place to Call Home

Modern Supply helps homeowner with log home kitchen remodeling project

Colonel Andy Jordan and wife Debbie have traveled the world and lived in places many of us only dream of. After a long and successful Army career, the Jordan’s began to think about retirement and where to settle down and call home. An East Tennessee native, Colonel Jordan was drawn back to the Knoxville area with its natural beauty and easy lifestyle and Debbie fully agreed.

Before: the log home kitchen with dated appliances & a narrow island.

After: Updated with new cabinetry, expanded island & new appliances

The top priority was updating the kitchen. The plan was to replace the dated appliances and relocate the sink and cooktop, keeping the cabinetry. After consulting with their contractor, they realized that repairs would be difficult and patch-work, and new cabinetry was the best way to go.

Debbie visited Modern Supply and sales manager-designer Debbie Johnson helped her select products that complemented the coziness of a log home and Jordans’ tastes. “I didn’t have a look in mind, but after Debbie’s visit to measure she made great recommendations,” comments Jordan.

Mixing maple cabinetry finishes and quartz countertop colors created visual interest while complimenting each other. The primary cabinet finish was called sand with a brushed grey glaze, paired with Cambria’s Devon countertop and a Blanco sink in truffle. The island was a stone finish with grey glaze, Cambria’s Yorkshire top, and a Blanco prep sink in biscotti. Stainless faucets from Brizo’s Talo collection were selected for their water-saving SmartTouch® Technology.

Little extras go a long way in highlighting the beauty of the cabinetry. Glass doors with LED light ribbon running along the inside brighten up the corner. Crown molding and light rail were added to complete the look.

Debbie selected stainless appliances and the double oven she always wanted. The sink and cooktop locations were switched in the redesign. The sink was installed below the window and the stovetop relocated to the enlarged island space. The island was already plumbed, making it perfect for a prep sink.

A corner nook was utilized by including a beverage cooler, TV, storage and a display cabinet with lighting. A perfect fit!
